W.E Vine, Expository Commentary on Isaiah, [1997], 8&nsbp; The scarlet may suggest the deep-dyed character of sin. There would seem to be a reference to Number 19:2, 6, 9, where scarlet was burnt in the sacrifice, and thus there is an inimation as to the atoning efficacy of the blood of Christ. The glaring character of sin is certainly in view, and for the whiteness of snow see Psalm 51:7. Some regard the scarlet and white as emblematic of the relation of fire to light, i.e., of the wrath of God against sin to His pardoning grace.
, [], John F Hobbins, The Great Arraignment; The opening diatribe of the book of Isaiah (1:2-20) is remarkable for its searing rhetoric, yet it concludes by offering a return to prosperity should the people and leaders of Judah heed the word of their God. The speech begins with a call to heaven and earth to act as witnesses and a summary brief against the nation (verses 2-3). It ends with an appeal to reach a settlement and a conditional offer of rehabilitation (verses 18-20).
